What is postpartum hair loss and why does it happen?

Postpartum alopecia is characterized as a general thinning (also known as diffuse thinning) over the whole scalp, and the extent of hair loss can vary considerably from mild to excessive shedding.

In general, normal hair shedding is approximately 50-80 strands of hair per day.  However during pregnancy , there are increased levels of estrogen in the body which keeps your hair in the growing (anagen) phase for longer than usual resulting in thicker hair and very few hairs are shed during pregnancy.

After childbirth, estrogen levels will be dropping back to normal.
