Does Your Child Need Supplements? A Pharmacist Spills the Truth
    Zakwan Shah
    March 07, 2025
    6 min
Supplements are a great. But could they also be beneficial for your child's learning, memory and overall brain power?

nazatul-profile Nazatul Amira Hamzah, Pharmacist at Primabumi Sdn Bhd

We had a chat with Nazatul Amira Hamzah, a qualified pharmacist with 10 years of experience in pharmacy practice to learn more about cognitive supplements.

Here's a pharmacist's take on supplements for boosting children's brain and memory.

Q1: What are cognitive supplements, and how do they benefit children?

    child-vitamin

Cognitive supplements are vitamins, minerals, and other substances that promote brain function, including memory, concentration, and overall cognitive development.

The term 'cognitive' refers to the mental processes involved in knowing, learning, and understanding things.

Cognitive supplements can be beneficial to children because they support brain development, enhance attention, and potentially improve academic performance.

Q2: Are cognitive supplements safe for children to use?

    child-supplement

When taken at the recommended doses, these cognitive supplements are generally regarded as safe for children.

However, it is critical to speak with a healthcare expert before starting any supplement to confirm its safety and suitability for your child.

Q3: What are the recommended cognitive supplements for enhancing learning and memory in children?

    omega-3-supplement

To support your child’s ability to learn and memorise, a cognitive supplement should contain one or a combination of the following micronutrients:

    • Omega-3 fatty acids

    • Iron

    • Zinc

    • Magnesium

    • Iodine

    • Vitamin D

    • B Vitamins

Q4: How do these micronutrients promote cognitive development in children?

    vitamin-D

The following summarises the role that each of these micronutrients plays in children's cognitive development:

    MicronutrientRoles in Cognitive Development
Omega 3 fatty acidsOmega-3 fatty acids include docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)

    • DHA forms a major structural fat in the brain and eyes.

    • EPA is critical for attention, hyperactivity, mood, and anxiety.

    Iron

    • Iron is required for the formation of haemoglobin, the component in red blood cells that transports oxygen to tissues.

    • It helps to produce neurotransmitters and myelin. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that allow the nervous system to send messages between nerve cells or between nerve cells and muscles. Myelin is a fatty substance that wraps around nerve fibers, making electrical signals travel faster.

    Zinc

    • Zinc boosts neurotransmitter function.

    • It is required for the breakdown of DHA in the brain and melatonin. Melatonin regulates dopamine, an important neurotransmitter. Low dopamine levels are linked to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

MagnesiumMagnesium promotes electrical connections in the brain that are important for learning and remembering new information.
IodineIodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, which supports brain and nerve development. This occurs during pregnancy and early infancy.
Vitamin DVitamin D helps improve focus and brain function, protects the brain from damage, and speeds up communication between nerve cells.
    B vitamins

    • B vitamins are essential for making neurotransmitters, which are responsible for brain signals.

    • They help increase brain activity by enhancing energy production in brain cells.

Q5: Which foods are rich in the above micronutrients?

    omega-3

The following table lists common foods containing each micronutrient:

    MicronutrientSources
Omega 3 fatty acidsOily fish, nuts and seeds and their oils (pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds), olives and avocadoes.
IronRed meat, poultry, beans, dark green leafy vegetables and dried fruit such as raisins and apricots.
ZincPumpkin and sesame seeds, beef, lamb, oysters and wheatgerm.
MagnesiumWholegrains, nuts, seeds and leafy green vegetables .
IodinePackaged bread, seafood, eggs and dairy.
    Vitamin D

    • Vitamin D is mainly produced in the skin on contact with sunlight.

    • They are also found in fatty fish like sardines and salmon, certain types of mushrooms, and egg yolks.

B vitaminsSalmon, trout, legumes, seeds, eggs, dairy products, and leafy greens.

Q6: My child is fussy about their food. I’m afraid they may not get enough essential micronutrients on a daily basis. Is giving them cognitive supplements a good idea?

    picky-eater

I strongly advise you to consult a healthcare professional to determine whether your child could benefit from a cognitive supplement, and, if so, which product would best suit their needs.

Another good option is a complete milk formula. Kid’s multivitamins offer a range of vitamins and minerals, but their contents vary among different products.

In addition, omega-3 fatty acids, often known as fish oil, are usually available as a stand-alone product and are not included in multivitamins.

Teaching your child to eat a balanced diet that includes a wide variety of foods will benefit them the most in the long run.

Q7: How can probiotics influence a child’s cognitive health?

    probiotics

Probiotics maintain your child's gut health, a connection to brain health that is now well-established.

A healthy gut can improve their mood, behavior, and thinking skills.

Q8: How do antioxidants like Vitamin E and Vitamin C benefit children’s cognitive functions?

    antioxidant

Antioxidants protect the brain from tissue damage caused by free radicals.

Free radicals are unstable atoms that can harm cells, causing illness and ageing.

An easy way to get more antioxidants is by eating a variety of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables.

Q9: What are the potential side effects of cognitive supplements in children?

Potential adverse effects vary with each supplement but may include gastrointestinal issues, allergic reactions, and interactions with medications that render the medication less effective or prone to toxicity.

Always consult your healthcare provider before starting your child on any supplements.

Q10: Other than supporting my child’s brain development through the use of cognitive supplements, is there any other important step I should pay attention to?

    meals

Absolutely. It’s essential to ensure your child has a balanced blood sugar (glucose) level throughout the day.

Since glucose in the blood serves as crucial fuel for the brain, you should encourage your child to consume small meals more frequently to maintain balanced energy and focus.

Sugar, whether too much or too little, impairs your child's ability to concentrate.

Think You Know Your Baby’s Diaper? Here’s What You Might Be Missing
    Eisya Ereena
    January 07, 2025
    7 min

When you bring home a newborn, every choice feels like the most important one - from picking the right baby bottle to deciding which diapers to stack in the nursery.

But here’s the thing: how often do we actually stop to think about what’s inside those diapers?

As a mummy of two, I’ll admit, my main checklist for diapers has always been pretty straightforward - do they keep my baby dry and comfortable?

And let’s be honest, when you’re juggling a million things, it’s usually a quick grab and go.

If the size is right and the brand looks familiar, into the cart it goes!

And it turns out, I’m not alone.

    How do I know this?

Because when one of my mummy friends asks me to do a quick diaper run, my follow-up question is usually, 'Which kind?'

The answer is almost always the same: 'Whichever is fine, as long as it fits.'

The only other factor that sometimes matters? Whether it’s tape or pants.

But maybe it’s time we paused and asked: beyond the fit, dryness, and convenience, what do we really know about the materials in constant contact with our baby’s delicate skin?

The Diaper Dilemma: How Much Do We Really Know?

    toddler wearing diapers

So, we know that in the whirlwind of parenthood, convenience often takes center stage.

A diaper that’s absorbent and keeps the mess contained? Perfect.

But let’s pause for a moment.

Have you ever wondered about the materials that make up these seemingly magical products?

Are they as safe as they are functional?

For parents, especially those with newborns, these are critical questions to consider.

Some parents may assume that all diapers are created equal.

After all, they’re sold in stores and advertised as safe for babies.

But not all diapers are the same, and the materials used can vary widely between brands.

Some might contain substances that could be potentially harmful to a baby’s sensitive skin.

It’s a reality that’s not often talked about but deserves our attention.

    What’s Inside the Diaper?

    diapers with different sizes

Diapers are made of multiple layers designed for specific purposes, like absorbing moisture and preventing leaks.

But these layers may include components such as:

    • Absorbent gels and polymers: These are what keeps your baby dry but their chemical composition may raise questions.

    • Fragrances and lotions: Added to mask odours or soothe skin but could irritate some babies.

    • Plastics and synthetic fibres: Often present in the waterproof outer layers, but are they breathable enough for your baby’s comfort?

    • Chlorine: Often found in those pearly white diapers which mimics purity and cleanliness.

    • Dyes: These are used to create the cute and colourful designs we all hate to love.

While many brands are transparent about their materials, others provide little information.

This lack of clarity makes it even more important for parents to ask questions and seek out answers.

Why Should Parents Care About Diaper Materials?

    little baby in diapers

A newborn’s skin is much thinner than an adult’s, making it more permeable and sensitive.

So, it’s not just about dryness and comfort - it’s about understanding exactly what’s touching their delicate skin, 24/7.

As a parent, I find myself deeply invested in ensuring that everything my kids use is safe and clean - and I know I’m not alone.

I spend time researching the best steam and UV sterilisers, and carefully choose skincare products that I trust.

But shouldn’t we be applying that same level of care to the diapers we use?

After all, diapers aren’t just a convenience - they’re an essential part of daily life, directly affecting your baby’s comfort and wellbeing.

So here’s the question: are the materials in the diapers we choose truly as safe and gentle as we hope, especially considering how intimately they touch our babies’ skin?

How Can Malaysian Parents Make Informed Choices?

    mother buying diapers in store

    Look for Transparency

    woman on magnifying glass

Choose brands that are upfront about their materials and manufacturing processes.

Labels like 'hypoallergenic' or 'dermatologically tested' can provide some reassurance, but don’t stop there!

Dig deeper into what those terms mean. Check for certifications or third party testing to back up these claims.

Rule of thumb: a brand that openly lists its materials is often one you can trust.

    Avoid Unnecessary Additives

    baby with diapers

Fragrances and lotions might sound like nice extras, but they’re not essential and can sometimes irritate your baby’s sensitive skin.

Go for diapers without unnecessary additives that prioritise safety and gentleness over artificial enhancements.

    Trust Your Instincts

    mother wondering about baby wellbeing

If a diaper causes redness, discomfort, or irritation, don’t hesitate to switch brands.

Every baby is different, and what works for one child may not work for another.

Pay attention to your baby’s cues and trust your gut and to mummies out there - our guts are usually right.

    Ask Questions

mother holding baby while looking at the phone

Engage with other parents in your community, join parenting groups, or consult your pediatrician to learn more about diaper options.

Often, the best advice comes from firsthand experiences of like-minded parents and expert insights.

    Look for Key Features

pregnant mummy looking at diapers for baby

Some features can make all the difference for your baby’s comfort and skin health:

    • Soft and Fluffy Bands: Ensure the diaper has gentle, non irritating bands that won’t dig into or rub against your baby’s skin.

    • High Breathability: A breathable diaper allows air to circulate, reducing the chance of rashes and discomfort.

    • Quick Moisture-Wicking: Look for diapers that quickly absorb moisture and lock it away to keep your baby dry and happy for longer.

    • Softness: A diaper that feels as gentle as cotton against your baby’s skin will enhance comfort and reduce irritation.

    Consider the Price Point

    woman calculating expenses

Diapers are an everyday essential, and their cost can quickly add up over time.

Look for a brand that offers a balance between quality and affordability.

In other words, focus on a brand that provides all the features your baby needs but is also sustainable for your budget in the long run.

After all, your little one deserves the best without compromising your financial peace of mind.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can make thoughtful choices that prioritise both your baby’s wellbeing and your family’s needs.

Digging Deeper: Why It's Time to Reconsider What's Inside Your Baby's Diaper

    mother and baby resting

Diapers are one of the most used products in your baby’s first years, yet discussions about their safety and materials often take a backseat.

As parents, it’s time we start asking the right questions:

    • What do we want in a diaper for our baby?

    • What don’t we want?

    • And how can we ensure our choices are both informed and safe?

The goal isn’t to alarm parents believing that they have been doing it wrong, but to inspire curiosity.

By raising awareness, we can encourage more conversations around diaper safety and ensure our little ones get the care they deserve, right down to the tiniest details.

So mummies and daddies, what’s in your baby’s diaper?

It’s worth a second look, don’t you think?

Let’s Hear from a Fellow Mummy

When it comes to making informed decisions about disposable diapers, it always helps to hear from someone who’s been there.

Watch this insightful video by Reina Lum, where she raises issues and concerns you didn't know you could have about disposable diaper which may just give you that “Aha!” moment you’ve been looking for!

Managing Sarcopenia: The Hidden Risk in Ageing
    Eisya Ereena
    December 18, 2024
    3 min

As we add more candles to our birthday cakes, our bodies start throwing us some curveballs.

Hello, hormonal changes and that 'older and wiser' mantra many seem to love throwing around.

But one sneaky little guest often skips the spotlight: Sarcopenia.

In simple terms, Sarcopenia is the slow and steady shrinking of your muscle mass and strength - kind of like your muscles deciding they’re ready for semi-retirement.

According to health experts, this condition begins as early as our 30's, with muscle mass declining by 3-8% every decade thereafter.

For Malaysians, the statistics are alarming: 1 in 3 individuals faces this issue, making Sarcopenia an emerging public health concern.

    What Exactly is Sarcopenia?

    woman hand on chin wondering

Sarcopenia might sound like a fancy medical term, but it’s a condition that can have a profound impact on daily life.

Simple tasks like climbing stairs or carrying groceries can become noticeably harder as muscle loss creeps in.

And it’s not just about the physical challenges.

Sarcopenia can also take an emotional toll, especially for caregivers juggling their own wellbeing while supporting ageing parents and young children.

And the effects go beyond just weaker muscles.

Sarcopenia increases the risk of falls and fractures due to reduced strength and stability, often threatening a person’s independence as they age.

This gradual loss of muscle mass doesn’t happen overnight.

It’s a slow process that accelerates with age, particularly for those with sedentary lifestyles or poor nutrition.

By the time someone reaches their 70s or 80s, the cumulative effects can lead to significant limitations in mobility and overall function.

Experts Weigh In On Preventing Sarcopenia: Small Changes, Big Impact

    woman doing daily stretches

    The good news?

    Sarcopenia isn’t inevitable.

A combination of regular exercise and a diet rich in protein and calcium can go a long way in maintaining muscle health.

Specialising in Rehabilitation Medicine in ReGen Rehab Hospital, expert Prof Datin Dr Lydia Abdul Latiff places a strong emphasis on the importance of incorporating nutrient rich fortified milk into your daily routine which works to boost protein intake.

Prof Lydia explains that sufficient protein intake is essential for muscle repair and growth, and fortified milk offers a convenient, nutrient-packed solution to address this need.

On the other hand, Dr Ramani A/P Arumugam, Consultant Geriatrician and Physician at ReGen Rehab Hospital further adds that prevention is possible with small but consistent changes.

'Eating a healthy diet rich in protein, calcium and vitamin D along with regular exercise, can make a big difference,' she explains.

Enfagrow A+ Brain Speedometer Challenge Grand Finale Highlights the Role of Fast Brain Processing Speed in Developing Future-Ready Kids
    Sarah
    December 13, 2024
    4 min
Mead Johnson Nutrition Malaysia proudly concluded the Enfagrow A+ Brain Speedometer Challenge Grand Finale today at Petrosains KLCC, bringing together 27 young finalists  aged from 1 -6 years to showcase their cognitive abilities.

The event underscored the early five years as a 'golden window' for brain development, during which almost 90% of a child’s brain forms with over one million neural connections made every second.

This critical period fosters next-level intelligence—traits that are Advanced, Attentive, and Adaptable—and emphasises the importance of fast brain processing speed for learning, problem-solving, and adaptability.

The role of MFGM in Enfagrow A+ was highlighted for its support of rapid processing speed and cognitive resilience.

Additionally, the COMEL developmental milestone toolkit, first introduced at the Future-Ready A+ Kids Expo earlier this year, enables parents and healthcare professionals to track developmental milestones actively, ensuring children gain the foundational skills for lifelong learning.

At the Expo, participants also competed in the Enfagrow A+ Brain Speedometer Challenge, where 27 finalists were selected based on their real-time cognitive performance.

Enfagrow A+ Brain Speedometer Challenge: A Fun Way to Engage and Test and Showcase Brain Abilities in Children

L to R: Goh Liu Ying, Olympic Silver Medalist and Enfagrow A+ Mum; Ms Trang La Phuong, Nutrition Marketing Manager of Mead Johnson Nutrition Malaysia; Prof Cheah Pike See, Head of the Department of Human Anatomy at Universiti Putra Malaysia

The Enfagrow A+ Brain Speedometer Challenge Grand Finale showcased children’s processing speed in real time, highlighting how quickly and effectively they absorb and respond to information.
